Coot ( falica americana, Rallidae): Reported Location: Found in ponds, marshes, and wet meadows near water ( Sparks 1981: 15), it was not noted by consultants for consideration in any of the areas under proposed impact. Ute Uses and Methods of Procurement: The American coot was listed by Fowler ( 1986: 87) as one of the birds eaten by Utes in the past. Use by Neighboring Populations in the Great Basin: Fowler ( 1986: 87) indicated that several other Great Basin groups also ate this species. B .5.5.... . Eagles*.. Hawks,.. Owls,,.. and.. other.. Raptors ( including Buteo regalis ( ferruginous hawk); Accipiter gentilis ( northern goshawk); Buteo lagopus ( rough- legged hawk); Acquila chrysaetos ( golden eagle); Haliaeetus^ leucocephalus ( bald eagle); Accipitridae): The Ute name for eagle is " qui nat's" or quahnatch'" ( Wardle 1969: 19), for hawk is " can suv"'( Wardle 1969: 19), and for owl " moo 06' pwYts" ( Wardle 1969: 10) or / muu= pi= ci/ ( Smith 1974a: 268). Reported Location: The ferruginous hawk is located in open desert areas, while the golden eagle inhabits open mountains, foothills, canyons and the bald eagle frequents lakes, rivers, and marshes near open country perching sites ( Sparks 1981: 12- 13). Owls ( Strigiformes Tytonidae) are in all environments in northeast Utah ( Sparks 1981: 19). Whiterocks Canyon and its environ, the foothills north of Neola, and the cliffs above Coyote Basin pond are known to support raptor populations. Ute Uses and Methods of Procurement: The ferruginous hawk, northern goshawk, rough- legged hawk, western screech- owl, and the great horned owl were a source of food for the Utes in the past ( Stewart 1942: 244; Smith 1974a: 60; Fowler 1986: 85, 87).
