Show LB Faunal Resources The lakes above the canyons are all considered to be good fishing spots but are not regularly fished by the Utes because of the need to acquire a license. Of the lakes, Chepeta and Pole Creek, probably have the heaviest use because these are the easiest to access. On the other hand, those above the Lake Fork appear to be rarely if ever used by the Utes anymore ( Appendix B. 4). Hunting by the Utes in the higher mountain regions is also probably restricted by a lack of access to permits. Bears are one of the animals inhabiting the high mountain meadows of the Uintas, and one consultant indicated that black bears could be found near areas around Chepeta Lake. It is questionable, however, whether bears are hunted much anymore ( Appendix B. 2.1). An animal more likely to be secured in this area is the weasel whose fur is highly prized and worn by men in the Sun Dance, but this animal can be trapped on the reservation near water sources at lower elevations ( Appendix B. 3.8). Spiritual Considerations Although none of the lakes themselves appear to have any special ceremonial significance, as far as any of the consultants know, these are areas where there might be sites used on an individual basis for prayer and vision questing ( Appendix E. 2.3). Some of these lakes are associated with spiritual figures, however, and they are also reported to have stone cairns near their shores that have spiritual significance and should not be disturbed ( Appendix E. 3.2). l. F Other Considerations None reported. 2. Canyons and High Bench Watercourses Of all the areas under impact by planned water developments, the canyons and downstream high bench locations of rivers/ canals on the southern slopes of the Uintas are not only the most heavily used but also among the most culturally significant areas for the Northern Ute. In the east, the Whiterocks and Uinta rivers, along with their drainage systems, are the most varied ecologically and also have the greatest degree and number of different cultural uses.
