Show III. SOURCES OF INFORMATION Four general sources of data were sought for this report: 1) various ethnographic and historical studies that pertain to the Utes in general and the Northern Utes of the Uintah- Ouray Reservation in particular; 2) information on the natural plant and animal resources of the Uinta Mountains and Uinta Basin; 3) oral history manuscripts based on interviews primarily with Northern Ute in the 1960s and 1970s that are housed in Special Collections at the University of Utah; and 4) recent interviews with Northern Ute consultants from the Uintah- Ouray Reservation. A. Ethnographic and Historical Information A thorough inspection of ethnographic sources on the Utes and neighboring tribes in the Great Basin was made not only to identify and document floral and faunal resources of value to the Utes, but also to determine the significance of various site specific social and religious dimensions of Ute culture. Many ethnographic and ethnohistorical studies were reviewed ( see bibliography for a complete listing). The Handbook of North American Indians. The Great Basin. Vol. 11 was especially helpful, including Catherine Fowler's work ( 1986: 64- 97) on subsistence and ecology, Ake Hultkranz's article ( 1986: 630- 640) on religion, Sven Liljeblad's piece ( 1986: 641- 659) on oral traditions, Joseph Jorgensen's contribution on the Ghost Dance and Sun Dance ( 1986: 666- 672) and Donald Callaway, Joel Janetski, and Omer Stewart's ethnographic summary ( 1986: 336- 367) on the Utes. Other important ethnographic sources on the Utes included: Joseph Jorgensen's The Sun Dance Religion ( 1972). Anne Smith's Ethnography of the Northern Utes ( 1974). Joel Janetski's unpublished thesis The Western Ute of Utah Valley ( 1983). Omer Stewart's Ute- Southern Paiute ( 1942). Gottfried Lang's dissertation ( 1953), A Study of Culture Contact and Culture Change: The Whiterocks Utes in Transition and Beatrice Medicine Garner and Florence Hawley's article ( 1950) " Changing Food and Food Habits." In addition, a variety of historical studies and documents were examined including Fred Conetah's A History of the Northern Ute People ( 1982), June Lyman and Norma Denver's piece, Ute People: An Historical Study. Kevin Jones and Kathryn Mackay's overview, Cultural Resources Existing Data Inventory for Vernal District. Utah ( 1980), and various writings by Floyd O'Neil ( 1968, 1971, 1973, 1979) as well as some of the correspondence and reports of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. 29 |
