Show Stewart ( 1942: 337) related that the badger, which could not be smoked out of its hole, was killed by the Utes by starting a fire at the front of its hole and then sealing the entrance. The asphyxiated badger was dug up several days later. Pettit ( 1990: 38) reports that badger hides were used for paint bags. Use by Neighboring Populations in the Great Basin: Fowler ( 1986: 81) indicates that badgers were utilized by populations throughout the Great Basin but does not list the wolverine for any populations. B. 3,8.... Weasel,.. Mink,.. and.. Mar ten ( Mustela erminea and M. frenata ( weasel-shorttail and longtail), Mustela vision ( mink), Martes americana ( marten), Mustelidae): The Ute name for weasel is " pah ve1 cheech" ( Wardle 1969: 19). Reported Location: The shorttail weasel is found throughout Utah near water at higher elevations and is a rare species whereas the longtail weasel is common in all land habitat types. Marten, another rare species, can be found in all parts of Utah in coniferous forests at high elevations except the south ( Sparks 1981: 46). Weasels and mink are found in the higher mountain elevations of the region, and they're still hunted for their pelts ( a. i). None of the proposed impacts were singled out as problematic in terms of the habitats of these animals. Ute Uses and Methods of Procurement: Smith ( 1974a: 58) indicates that weasels were hunted in the winter and shot with an arrow. Weasel pelts are highly valued. The skins of weasels are used as hair wrappings and as pendants that are hung decoratively on men's shirts ( Sloane 1950: 319; Smith 1974a: 58). Marten skins were also used as pendants over a man's chest ( Sloane 1950: 320). These pelts are also an important part of the costume for the Sun Dance ( Jorgensen 1972: 182; Smith 1974a: 182- 6). Smith ( 1974a: 58) also reported weasel fur being made into caps. She indicated that the flesh was not eaten. Fowler ( 1986: 81) listed that the Northern Utes used the mink, but did not list the weasel or the marten for any Great Basin group. Stewart ( 1942: 244) reported only the weasel, of these three animals, as used by the Utes. Use by Neighboring Populations in the Great Basin: Fowler ( 1986: 81) indicated that mink were hunted by a number of Great Basin populations but does not list the weasel or marten at all. B, 3... 9 Kangaroo... Rat,.... Wood... Rat ( Dipodomys sp., Neotoma sp., and Perognathus sp, Heteromyidae, and peromyscus sp., Cricetidae): The Ute name for a rat is " can' chits"( Wardle 1969: 18), or / kaci= ci/ ( Smith 1974a: 269). The mouse is / pui= ci= ci/ ( Smith 1974a: 269). Reported Location: Sparks ( 1981: 42,43) lists several varieties of mice and rats, which occur statewide with some variation, in all types of 88 |
