Show 2. LB Faunal Resources The Whiterocks Canyon was singled out as a choice locale for hunting woodchuck ( marmot) which is still eaten by Utes today ( Appendix B. 3.4). Good sites for hunting/ trapping beaver were noted along the Whiterocks River from the mouth of its canyon to its juncture with the Green River ( Appendix B. 3.2). At the mouth of the canyon and just below is an area noted as a good spot for deer hunting. Another important area for deer is the Whiterocks and Ouray valley to the east ( Appendix B. l. l). And finally, locales north of Tridell are considered good for elk hunting, whereas areas to the east of this town are noted for antelope ( which are of recent importation) ( Appendix B. 1.2; Appendix B. 1.6). The Whiterocks River, where it flows through the canyon and just below its mouth, is considered a good area for fishing ( Appendix B. 4). It is also a good location for raptors whose feather and down are highly prized for religious use ( Appendix B. 5.5) and also for weasel and other fur- bearing animals whose pelts are worn at ceremonial dances ( B. 3.8). Mountain goats are noted here ( Appendix B. 1.5), and a wide variety of other animal species ( Appendix B. 2.2; Appendix B. 2.3; Appendix B. 3.1; Appendix B. 3.5; Appendix B. 3.6; Appendix B. 3.7; Appendix B. 3.9; Appendix B. 3.10; Appendix B. 3.11; Appendix B. 5.1; Appendix B. 5.3) are associated with this canyon and the neighboring high bench environments. All are reported to have been eaten or used for other purposes by the Utes. 2. LC Other Resources The higher, shaded areas of Whiterocks Canyon are noted as good areas to gather lichens for medicinal purposes ( Appendix C. l). The lower canyon elevations are reported as the prime area for the Utes to gather firewood ( 4.1). White clays used in the making of pottery are reported to be along canals fed by the Whiterocks River and located south of the Tridell road ( Appendix C. 2). 2. LD Sites of Social Significance There is one place that elicits strong concern on social grounds. This is where the cabins and remains of the White River band's old village are located along the west banks of the Whiterocks River ( Appendix D. l). The considerations here are not only the historical memories that this place evokes but also spiritual concerns surrounding the burials located in its immediate surroundings ( Appendix E. l). 2. LE Sites of Spiritual Significance Along the Whiterocks River, where it flows through the canyon and high bench below, there are a number of sites of spiritual significance. These include spots where marked and unmarked burials are placed 15 |
