Title Basket of Chips, page 065
Description Cheer, Romance, and Fdmily brought us a much more expensive article than we could afford, but we decided to keep it nevertheless. The next day the postman brought a letter with the return address of John Wanamaker"" on the end. What could he want to sell me, I wondered. But on opening it I found an offer of five hundred francs for my picture in the Salon. Just the price of our "expensive flower." That decided us to keep her as now we could afford such a luxury. What fine trips we had to different parks and gardens of Paris. When my wife became strong again and able to walk we bought a baby carriage and with our lunch would go for all day trips. It took some skill to cross the busy streets with a baby carriage but I soon became an adept. The woods of St. Cloud made a beautiful vacation day trip. June Rose was very bright and soon learned to express her own individuality which was alright except when it happened at midnight or in the early hours of the morning. Then the other near by occupants of the house would knock upon our walls. THE ADORATION OF AGES I began studies for my picture, "The Adoration of Ages" about this time and it took a good part of the second year to paint it."" There are many things connected with it that will be of interest. 5s John W anamaker (1838-1922) was the developer of one of this nation's first large department stores. He was also noted as a highly effective merchant in the use of advertising and was one of the first to hire advertising specialist firms or agencies. H. A. Gibbons, John Wnnnmnker (New York: Harper, 1926) ; J. H. Appel, Business Biogrnphy of John Wnnnmnker (New York: The Mac- millan Co., 1930); Gardner, History of Lehi, 272; and Harwood, "Autobiogra- phy," 3 l-32. 5g Although Willard Harwood stated that there were only two J. T. Har- wood "paintings relating to Christ" as a subject, there were at least three - Adorrltio~z of Ages in the Fairbanks Memorial Art Collection in Richfield; a work entitled Jesus Prenching (Brigham Young University Collection), which is probably another version of Adorntion; and Come Follow Me (L. D. S. Collec- tion, Salt Lake City). Harwood, Art of Jmzes T. Hmuood, 4, no. 35, 6, no. 60; Brigham Young University Collection files; Horne, Art Stmnds, 6. 6.5
