Later I took a few more lessons with Dan Weggeland who had studied in the Dusseldorf schooP 4 In 1914 Alice Merrill Horne stated that Harwood "brought up to a life of usefulness, trained in early youth to a trade, and living in an atmosphere of thrift and sobriety, . . . grew thoughtful and industrious. Ruth Harwood wrote "It was a wonderful occasion in the life of the ado- lescent James when he came to Salt Lake for a few weeks and took lessons from Lambourne and Weggeland who encouraged and inspired him. Friendships with John Hafen and C. E. Dallin were made at this period and were influential in his life." Hnrwood Art Exhibition, 4. Alfred Lambourne (1850-1926) arrived in Salt Lake City in 1866 and was an important figure in that city's early development of a painting tradition. Called "the Utah master of dawn, twilight and moonlight," Lambourne's strongest phase as a painter was from 1870-1890. The early and mid-career Lambourne tech- nique was a thin linear and "colored-in" manner more in keeping with the origi- nal Hudson River/Dusseldorf orientation of most Rocky Mountain School men. By the early nineties Lambourne became more interested in the pen than brush and wrote fourteen books of poetry and prose before his death in 1926. Olpin, Dictiomry, WL47. Danquart Anthon Weggeland (18274918) from Christiana, Norway, studied art in Stavanger, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Berlin, Germany, before coming to this country. The key stylistic term in regard to these centers where Weggeland studied is "Biedermeier Painting," a form of romantic early naturalism. The Biedermeier "expression, as it developed in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, parts of France, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, is now considered a minor development in European art, but as a source of later romantic-realist programs both in the `Old World' and the `New,' it has undeniable importance." Biedermeier painters stressed national characteristics in type, costume, and land- scape, and they frequently used a folksy approach rendered in a tight, slick, glossy technique. Such an approach to portrait, genre, and landscape painting was popu- lar during the time of Weggeland's initial training. Additionally, it was Dussel- dorf, of all the major centers devoted to the Biedermeier approach, that was the main European training mecca for many American painters at the time Weg- geland came to the United States as a Mormon convert (1861). Later as instructors at the University of Deseret, they trained many of the leading Utah artists. Their best known students included John Hafen, Lorus Pratt, Edwin Evans, J. T. Harwood, J. W.
