Description , A Basket of Chips Our first son arrived on Thanksgiving day and his mother always said that he "cheated" her out of one turkey dinner. She had prepared and stuffed it but his arrival had prevented her sharing it. We were pleased that the first was a boy, and we named him Willard Richards as it was the wish of his Grand- mother Richards."' This chip showed tendencies inherited from Harwood had to rely on a meager teaching income only occasionally aug- mented by the sale of a painting such as The Vdsntch Rnnge. That oil was "purchased by Heber J. Grant, Dr. C. F. Wilcox and ten other early art enthu- siasts and presented to the [Salt Lake City] Temple when just completed." Addi- tional recognition came as the result of the exhibition of Harwood's Little FGends at the 1892 Chicago World's Fair. Harwood's painting was for the most part, the solid and traditional sort praised later by numerous local critics. But there is also an easily seen and pleas- ing shift in some of his work, which is mostly landscape, toward a lighter palette and somewhat looser brush. Of these, one scene of 1893 (A Fmdy Picnic), called AZ1 the lVo&`s n Stnge by the artist's son Willard, even partakes of an early Monet-like absence of dark values. These are replaced by light/color-filled regions of transparent shade beneath brilliantly painted trees. Maurice Serullaz wrote "in 1867 both [Frederic] Bazille [1841-18701 and Monet began experi- menting together, with the idea of substituting figures painted out of doors for the traditional use of models in the studio." Each persuaded family members and associates "to pose for them in the open," and photographs were frequently used as "a basis for their work." Although it is more natural to place figures painted "out in the open" in outdoor scenes, critic John Canaday wrote that The Bridle Fnmdy painting "is filled with a curious, stiff, unnatural stillness" along with "a painstaking disposition of the elements of a nominally informal subject." The Harwood work shared to some degree these semi-theatrical characteristics (as in a tableau), and undoubtedly gained its later title through Willard Harwood's sense of such effects: "All the IWO&? n Stage . . . 1893 . . . A painting not seen by me during father's lifetime, but found when clearing the studio after his death. It was found rolled up. Upon seeing the painting I observed that the characters suggested Shakespeare's play, `As You Like It,' and I recalled the quotation, `All the World's a Stage.' Hmuood, 3, no. 23. 4O Willard Richards Harwood (1892-1982) was born on November 24, 1892, in Salt Lake City. "The boy served as a model for many drawings and paintings by his father at home and abroad, and spent considerable time in the galleries of Paris." His inclinations were more "toward scientific pursuits" how- ever, "and he subsequently enrolled at the University of Utah where "he studied physics, biology, chemistry and related subjects" in order "to qualify for a teach- ing position in the Salt Lake Schools." When his training was completed, he was hired by "the Salt Lake District as a mechanical arts teacher," and he taught "for 24 years . . . in the science area in Jordan Junior High School."
