Description Under a permit from the Hon. Secretary of the Interior, of the date of May 21, 1934, the writer examined pictographic groups and ancient ruins in the Hill Canyon district, 45 miles south of Ouray, Utah, in June of that year. Then on his retirement from the United States Indian Service on June 30 and his becoming Special Professor of Anthropology at Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah, on July 1, he requested Secretary Ickes to transfer his permit to that institution which was duly done on the date of August 21. Later, October 23, Utah County and on November 2, the State of Utah granted permission for "the Department of Anthropology of Brigham Young University, ... to examine lands about Utah Lake for the purpose of locating camp sites, ancient ruins, and other things of interest to science, and to excavate promising sites . . . with the understanding that anything discovered shall not be removed from the State of Utah and shall remain in the property of the State." Acting under these permits, the field work of the Department of Anthropology of Brigham Young University, under the writer's supervision, with the aid and cooperation of the whole university, has progressed nicely as given below.
