Show New and Little-Known Utah Diptera withNotes on the Taxonomy of the Diptera By S. W. BROMLEY, Ph.D.l Introduction The new species described in this paper were studied through the courtesy of Dr. George F. Knowlton, Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, Utah; and Dr. Vasco M. Tanner, Professor of Zoology and Entomology, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. To both of these well-known -entomologists, the writer wishes to express his utmost thanks. This paper contains the description of a new species of Therevidae, three new species of Asilidae, together with a discussion of generic relationships in the Asilidae, and of family relationships in the Muscoidea, demonstrated by keys and synopses. FAMILY THEREVIDAE Thereva fucatoides, new species Differs from Thereua [ucata Loew, Berlin Ent. Zeit., 16, p. 72 (1872) in that the wings lack the three unequal brown fascia characteristic of that species, as well as in the genitalia of the male, and in the male being much more hirsute. Total length, 11-13 mm. A black and yellow species, the male very hirsute. Vestiture largely yellowish. Mesonotum with three broad black stripes. The abdomen is yellow with dorsal black bands. Male.-Eyes contiguous. Head yellow hirsute, a bare area in center of face extending from base of antennae to mouthparts, yellowish-brown. Palpi brownish-yellow. Antennae yellow, third segment brownish. Fine hairs of antennae yellowish, bristles black. Bristles of upper mystax black. Occipital bristles black, proclinate. Thorax black, yellow pilose; bristles of mesonotum black; scutellars (4) black; some fine black hairs on disc of mesonotum. Mesonotum yellow with three broad black stripes which practically coalesce at the posterior margin. Scutellum with disc black, margin yellow. Legs yellowish-brown with yellow hairs and blackish bristles. Basal half of femora, the knees, tips of tibiae and tarsi brownish. Genitalia (Fig. 1) brownish, larger and of different shape than in Thereva fucata (Fig. 2). There are black hairs above and a tuft of brownish-yellow hairs below. Female.-Similar but less hirsute, femora mostly yellow, mesonotal black stripes narrower and not coalescing posteriorly. There are traces of blackish bands on the venter also, which are not evident in the male, possibly due to telescoping of the segments in the latter. The eyes furthermore, are not 1 Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories, Stamford, Connecticut, 99 , |
