An extension of ranges indicates the area occupied by this genus in Utah. has been made on the basis of specimens now at the University of Utah, which were collected during the summers of 1935 and 1936. It can be seen that Cynomys gunnisoni zuniensis enters Utah from Arizona and Colorado, being found only in Grand and San Juan Counties, Specimens at the University of Utah collected by Mr. S. D. Durrant are from as far north as the Colorado River above Moab, C. parvidens is found in Juab, Millard, San Pete, Sevier, Beaver, Piute, Iron, Garfield, and Kane Counties. The extension into. Kane County and farther west and south into Iron County of Cynomys parvidens is made upon the basis of specimens collected by Dr. A. M. Woodbury and the writer in This species is closest to C. leucurus in the Salina the summer of 1935. Emery region, perhaps indicating the migration route of the parent stock. C. leucurus enters Utah by way of Wyoming, being found in Summit County. Mr. Gordon Lee of Coalville informs me that within the last few It is also years this species has been particularly abundant in that region. found in Uintah, Duchesne, Utah, Carbon, Grand, and Emery Counties appar ently entering by way of Colorado. This species extends into Emery County for many miles, being common at Emery and Ferron. For many years it has been common as far east as Buckhorn Wash which drains into. the San Rafeal River at the foot of the Red Plateau. Note the small area in Utah County near Colton, Utah. This is rather high in the mountains in what is known as Emma Park at the head of Price Canyon. This distribution seems to be a discontinuous one for this small area which is surrounded by canyons and mountains. No other member of the species are found within twenty-five miles, more or less, as far as I am able - determine. The new areas included in the range of Cynomys in this paper are as follows: C. parvidens is found farther west and south than formerly sup posed, specimens being taken from Kanarraville in Iron County and near Long Valley Junction in Kane County. C. gunnisoni zuniensis occurs north into Grand County, C. leucurws has been identified farther south and west in Emery County, at Colton in Utah County, and Coalville in Summit County. to 1 Carbon County High School, Price, Utah. 197 |
