This theory rose to prominence during the mid-17th through mid-19th centuries due to renewed interest in biblical history and the belief that contemporary Indigenous peoples could not have been the same ancient peoples who created the monumental earthworks found across North America. Smith cites various linguistic, archaeological, and cultural practices from many different Indigenous groups for his argument. |
