Show 153 when his money was gone and his property heavily mortgaged, his two younger wives were not able to go to a regular medical college. Yet they had the best medical education and training that could be obtained in Salt Lake City in the late 70s and early 80s. And Lizzie had unusual advantages. She went out with some of the best doctors, both men and women, on their cases, not only for childbirth but also for their surgical cases. She finally obtained a license as a medical practitioner and traveled throughout Utah and surrounding states 20 "helping suffering humanity" when doctors were scarce. Back again to Ellis. By April 22, with the spring term half over, Ellis is less confined by classes and is spending every spare moment researching and writing for her thesis. She has chosen as her subject "The Function of Generation," and is awed at its scope. Her reactions to a letter from Milford are noteworthy. A letter from Milford yesterday informs me of an addition to our little flock. Sister Lizzie has another little girl and has been wonderfully blessed through the power of Faith. In remarking the goodness of our Heavenly Father and the manifestations of His mercies in this relation, my husband says: "So let us encourage you, and say to you, the Lord will bless you and preserve you from all evil and in your approaching confinement you will be blessed far above any blessing you ever received before, and your heart will rejoice in His great goodness to you in your hour of sickness. So be of good cheer for all will be well with you. Have no fear for no evil will come unto you." How comforting and encouraging are these words to me. I have longed so much for my husband's blessing ere that dreaded hour shall come, but these great promises, that I can feel were made by the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, have banished all my fears and I do indeed feel that "All will be well with me," though I know not today where I am to go nor what I am to do.^1 |
