The draft animals, the wagon they were pulling, and Brother Hillstead, were well on their way toward going downstream instead of across when Milford appeared, shoulder-deep in the water, took hold of a harness, and redirected them. Upon arriving in Arizona, this fine Hillstead couple from low, damp England could not appreciate the high, arid atmosphere they encountered. As they returned home with 4 Milford, he_ drove the teams across the rivers. Early in July, while awaiting the return of her "two dear Bards," Ellis-hoping the change will benefit her health-pays a surprise visit to Pleasant Grove. This time the travel is swift and pleasant because of the "ride on the cars." July 5th Pleasant Grove I arrived here yesterday morning, taking my friends all by surprise. I hope I will receive benefit from the change of scene. ... July 6th Grandmother had a family dinner. We all enjoyed ourselves very much but I could not help but meditate upon the changes of just two years. I believe I am a better woman than I was then. I have had more experience and I have learned therefrom. I think I have learned the lesson of patience. I feel to trust more in my Father in Heaven, believing that He can overrule all things for our good. I know that this trip south has been a great expense to us but I believe it will prove to be a blessing to us, that we will in after years be thankful for the experience. It will be hard for Milford to get along with such a large family. But thank Heaven they are a united family and have "willing hearts and ready hands" and with the aid of the Lord we never need to be fearful of the results. July 11th My visit is approaching its termination. I have enjoyed seeing my dear friends, those who loved me and cared for me in childhood.
