And, how much more disconcerting for the people of this area were there to be several threats or even attacks on other local places at about the same time: private schools, for instance; state and national parks and shrines; even military installations. What if there was even an incredibly bold, almost suicidal - if ineffectual - assault upon the hugest, most vital military installation in the entire state (in the entire nation, really), as this poor lonely boy, perhaps ranting about John Hinckley all the while, proved to be dangerous as only a maniac with an apparently hallucinated army backing him up can be? And what if this unfortunate, misunderstood, arrested adolescent were to have firebombed the convent, among other places, using the rarest, most expensive and efficient materials and techniques, the most sophisticated explosives and remote detonation devices known on either side of the Baltic Sea? Why, wealthy parents would have their daughters out of the Trianon in a week. The rich people that considered this area something of a resort, a place to escape from the pressures of rich living, would be inclined to avoid a place tainted with something so base as terrorism and international politics. The motions of the rich could be relied upon to establish something of a trend among the upper-middle class. The more astute realtors in the area would opt to sell at any opportunity. A panic situation would develop that might even be intense enough to budge the legendarily unbudgeable Catholics. The nuns might even be persuaded to relinquish their claim on |
