Show Acting Alone Page 53 On the other hand, was it possible that the place itself was infected with essence of Axelrad? Sam wouldn't be surprised if the little turd had been creepy-crawling Saint Paphnutius occasionally for food and for kicks under cover of the popular assumption that all nuns, from the time of the Devils of Loudon to the present, like to fancy themselves under siege, so the authorities never bother to seriously investigate sightings. Someone slight and wraithlike like Axelrad would have Carte Blanche to barge right into the kitchen like Casper the Friendly Ghost. What about access to the convent? Sam had seen that parasite Chaplain walking his four-legged meatgrinder by the front gate. How would the little Jew get in to creepy-crawl? Well, Shanny had told Sam the legends of bottomless tunnels under Saint Paphnutius, in the deepest recesses of which NORAD itself clicked and blipped like a giant silicone minotaur. Maybe Axelrad had weaseled himself an inlet down there. There were great possibilities in the juxtaposition of such a crazy little worm with something giant and unimaginable like NORAD. There was nothing much one could put past Axelrad. Sam remembered the various recurring episodes back at Tuttle Hall College Preparatory Institution, where Axelrad would blow off a piece of an ear or finger while making a bomb in his bedroom out of a piece of lead pipe plus thirty million match heads, and everybody would hear it and see it on the news: blood all up and down the upper class, upper Avenues mansion walls. Maybe Axelrad would someday soon do something insane enough to make him famous and writable-about, just as a favor to old Sam, so he could exorcise nun's-cousin Spikey from his ambitious brain. |
