They are as enchanted and graceful and responsive as if nothing will ever go wrong - as if they will never get old or soft or scarred. "Aren't they gorgeous?" I whisper to her. "They are so beautiful." "Can you believe we ever looked like that?" She leans toward me in the darkness. "We could've been as good as that!" "You might have. Not me. I never looked that good. If I did, it was a million years ago." She bursts into laughter. "Shhhhh!" Says a gentleman in back of us. After the last curtain call, after the smiles, the adoration and the cheering, the audience moves out of the rows and up the aisles into the outside lobby. |
