I didn't want to be lost. Not in any way. One minute I was small and cold, skulking naked in a strange bathroom, and the next I was at the bottom of the stairs, alone. "Wait - you can't go home alone." The stairs creaked. "Who knows what evil lurks at every corner!" Paul dropped his hands from the bannister into his pockets. He whistled again. The sound was a whisper almost too soft to hear. What is love, Mama? Not this. No, not this. A little after four A.M. - "So? How was it? What did you do?" Jenny asked, not opening her eyes. "Nothing. We ate. And we saw a very old movie." I stopped carefully, not looking at her. Jenny opened one eye toward the clock. "Did you sleep with Paul?" |
