Show CHRYSALIS PAGE 154 "How to Have Your Lucky Number Horoscope Individually Prepared," is an article telling how Jacques Brel has died after a "ten-year battle" with - guess what? I open this morning's paper - first page says "Solvent Stops Cancer Cells - Tested in Mice." Six of them, to be exact. Six tiny, bald, defenseless creatures. Further testing will be done on 50 to 100 more cancer-afflicted mice and if the results are "encouraging" there will be experiments with rabbits, dogs, and monkeys, followed by human trials within 3 - 5 years. Can I wait that long? I have visions of dying, and the following morning's headlines will announce: "CANCER LICKED! Sure-cure Discovered at Last!" Television's Good Morning America yesterday also had an interview with a doctor, a researcher, who explained "custom-blended drugs" - the surgeon removes a piece of the patient's cancer, minces it, and injects it into "nude" mice, who then grow that particular individual's cancer. Or else the cancer is cultivated in a laboratory dish and is then analyzed, enabling them to treat a specific, individual cancer with a variety of drugs and choose which has the greatest effect. The doctor bases his research on a theory that the wayward cells can be cured, and need not be killed - a sort of humane penal system |
