The challenge was the customary one given by a travelling party when they encounter a number of strangers or are attacked by persons they don't recognize. Turi knew this was a critical encounter. He answered clearly in like manner. "We are from Rang! above and Paoa beneath." The enemy patrol accented the answer, mistaking Turi's war oartv for a friendly group from a fellow tribe. Turi and his warriors remained concealed until the scouting narty moved on. Soon they could see the fires of the enemy oa.
