Show - "? years ago. After manv long days of voyaging, his wife shouted, "He Ao! He Ao!" ("a cloud! A cloud!") As they sailed closer, the cloud before their eyes became a long bright world, the land of the lcng-line- ering daylight, the land of the long white cloud, Aotearoa. Here the Maori dwelt, tilling the soil, hunting, fighting his intertribal wars, and raising his family until a new advent changed his life: The great white bird with the pale-skinned mariners sailed into his harbcrs. This was the coming of exolorers and missionaries to Aotearoa, the landing of the Pakeha in the land of the Maori. The first such shin was that of Captain James Cook in 17^9. This advent marked the beginning of many changes in the Maori way of life, some good and som9 bad. It started new wars between the Maori and the Pakeha with vicious battles and much bloodshed. This warfare carried on until an equitable and honorable agreement was reached between the two peoples. On February ^, 18I4.O, the Treaty of Vaitanpi was signed, making New Zealand a British Colony. This is the Island country this stcrv is about. The characters, although based upon real oeoole, are fictional. The background, the georraohy, and most of the events are factual. |
