Show - 1 - INTRODUCTION This is the story of a beautiful Island country and of its native inhabitants, the Maori peoole. They are a hardy seafaring Polynesian who are cousins to the Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, Tongan and Raro-tongan. It is Maori tradition that in the dim distant past their ancestors came from across the Sea of Kiwa, from a far distant land of Hawaiki and settled in Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud, now known as New Zealand. A brave and chivalrous warrior, the old time Maori also had much of the ooet and artist in his blood. The modern Maori, though perhaps auite different from his forefathers, still retains many of his characteristics. It is true that his fighting days are now over. For the most part, he now dwells in his tribal village in relatively primitive stvle with his familv, at peace with himself and the rest of the world. A simole-hearted, |
