He streaked rapidly over the surface of Tangaroa's deep domain, rhythmically rippling the long muscles of his strong arms and back. A youth who had just lived sixteen winters of earth life, Roa felt akin to the sea. Instinctively, his mother knew her first-born was an extraordinary child and had placed uoon him the name Roa, meaning tall or long. The name was well-chosen, for he was tall and wiry, lean and of strong muscle, built differently from most of his people who were short and stocky of build. He wore his suoole strength with the nuiet dignity and self-assurance that often marks the son of a noble chief. |
