Show - h - Pounamu Greenstone (Jade) "Roa, Roa! Your father wishes to see vou at once!" Roa was not surprised at the message the young lad brought to him as he returned to the village. His brother, Ruruku, bad seen him and his new friend, a ^akeha, or white man, talking together on the beach. Ruruku would not understand the unusual friendship but would only see it as a betrayal of tribal custom; a betrayal which must be reported to their father, Turi, chief of his people. With pounding heart and leaden feet, Roa entered the village. The stern expression on his father's face told Roa that Ruruku had informed the chief of the secret meetings. Turi's words verified his anger. |
