Show Fig. 143 Gravestone, wheat. Brigham City Cemetery. John Henry Bott. Marble. Ca. 1883. H: 120 cm. W: 60 cm. On this stone, the rake and the words, "He rests from his labors," suggest that the deceased was a farmer. The extended verse that follows serves both as a minilegend describing the deceased's life experiences and as a tribute to him. Notice the use of specifically Mormon imagery such as the "iron rod," a reference to righteous living. The first settler in this town, Is laid to rest under this mound. The first Bishop of the place, Did much to quiet the native race. Fed them, and repaired their guns. Which caused them to be the best of chums. Always lent a willing hand, To make the wilderness a fertile land. Was mobed and drove from post to post, But still retained the Holy Ghost. Holding fast to the iron rod, Was always known to worship God. May his remains in quiet lay, Untill the resurrection day. He being persicuted all around, May with the faithful saints be crowned. 143 |
