Show Club. Ute (?). Stone, wood, commercially produced leather, cotton thread, glass seed beads. 1920s. L: 61.2 cm. W: 12.9 cm. Collection of Utah Museum of Natural History. This nonfunctional artifact was produced for sale to tourists. Hatband. Northern Ute. Collected at Ouray, Utah, in 1923. Commercial thread, glass seed beads. Loomed beadwork. Ca. 1921 (?). L: 68.5 cm. W: 3.0 cm. Collection of Utah Museum of Natural History. The "1921" probably indicates the date of manufacture. However, numbers and letters were sometimes used as design elements in seed beadwork. The pattern was probably derived from trade china or textiles. Strike-a-light pouch. Southern Ute. Native and commercially worked hide, sinew, commercial thread, glass seed beads, metal tinklers, and bells. Lazy-stitched beadwork. Early 1900s (?). L: 15.5 cm. W: 9.0 cm. Collection of Utah Museum of Natural History. The beadwork design is probably an adaptation of a china or chintz pattern. 17 |
