Show A variety of visual symbols tied to Mormonism are thus recognizable. Though some are not visually unique to Utah or Mormonism, the context in which they occur and function usually is. The distinction between folk symbols and institutional expressions remains difficult. Some symbols were tied almost exclusively to nineteenth- century Mormon practices and are not generally accessible today. An enduring symbol, the beehive suggests many levels of meaning and works in multiple contexts. New symbols arise with changing events and changing environments. But whatever the didactic or conceptual underpinnings of "Mormon" symbols, the visual texture and unexpected delight that they contribute are welcome. 123 |
