Show Fig. 61 Armchair. Attributed to John or Thomas Cottam. Softwood, painted. Ca. I860. H: 90 cm. W: 54.5 cm. D: 44 cm. Collection of DUP, Salt Lake City. John and Thomas Cottam, brothers who came to Utah in 1852, continued making chairs in Utah as they had done in England, John at his Fifth West Turning Shop in Salt Lake City and Thomas in St. George. The accounts of both craftsmen refer to "ball-back" chairs with rush seats. This pioneer version of the Fancy Sheraton ball-back chair could have been made by either of the Cottams (Brigham Young Invoice Book no. 2, John Cottam no. 720, Archives, LDS Historical Department; Thomas Cottam journal, manuscript in private collection). Fig. 62 Side chair. Brigham City (?). Softwood, painted. Ca. 1865. H: 75.5 cm. W: 37.9 cm. D: 37.0 cm (seat). Collection of Jon Sweet, Salt Lake City. With its raked rear legs and back and yellow striping accentuating the exaggerated lines, this otherwise simple chair shows how stylish pioneer chairmakers could be. The gently curved Empirelike crest is decorated with original gilt stenciling. 66 |
