Show these basins and hybridization among these forms. Analysis of morphological characters indicated a close relationship between G atraria and the isolated monotypic genus Iotichthys, however, variation in mtDNA sequences suggests closer affinity of Iotichthys with Richardsonius. Lack of congruence between these character sets could result from ancient hybridization and replacement of mtDNA of G. atraria with that of G. cypha or may indicate past hybridization between Iotichthys and Richardsonius. These studies exemplify the utility of molecular characters for biogeographic studies of the Great Basin. Synthesis of results from studies of mtDNA and nuclear gene variation for minnows and additional groups ( e. g., suckers, sculpins) will provide biogeographical information essential for tests of hypothesized historical connections obtained from geological studies of the region. |
