Show The data of Table 17 are abstracted from the informations of Table 18 and 19 respectively, based upon the surveys of journey- to- work by the U. S. Bureau of the Census. The journey- to- work questions were first included in the decennial census in 1960, so that comparable earlier data do not exist. The data are based on sample surveys: 25 percent in 1960, and 15 percent of the population in 1970. The data do not distinguish between salaried workers or the self- employed; and they exclude those who work at their places of residence. Projections of Household Size and of Dwelling Units The number of dwelling units to be needed in future years in the region and County will be determined by the numbers of household units. Household units may consist either of families or single adults.* Nationally, average household size has been decreasing at a rapid rate, from 3.33 in 1960 to 3.14 in 1970, a decrease of 5.7 percent. In the same period, the household size in Salt Lake County decreased by 4.3 percent, from 3.50 to 3.35. In future years, the amount of decrease in Salt Lake County is expected to be at an even slower rate relative to the United States as a whole. Table 20 shows expected average household size in the United States in future years and the figure for Salt Lake County as determined from a printout of Series C- DF of the BEBR, University of Utah. It is suggested that the increase in household size in Salt Lake County ( as determined from the ratio of total population to occupied dwelling units) for the year 1975 appears to be an anomaly and may be based upon an underestimate of the number of occupied dwelling units** The County figure for * Hence, average family size always exceeds average size of household. ** This comment is based upon gross data and on the projected ratios shown above. It could be that the 1970- 1975 increase in the Salt Lake County household size ratio is based upon specific local information obtained in recent years. If this is the actual case, then the suggested revision of the ratios as given in Table 20 is inapplicable. 30 |
