Show Employment of Residents of Salt Lake County Employment of the residents of Salt Lake County is a figure which relates directly to the amount of the County's resident population and the size of its labor force. The number of jobs located in the County is another type of statistic, one which is more readily considered as the County's share, over time, of the total number of jobs in the Wasatch Front counties. It is important to bear this distinction in mind in considering levels of employment-- the number of persons with employment, and the numbers of located jobs. Table 14 shows a brief historical picture of total employment of residents of the County, from 1940 to 1970. A broader picture of employment of County residents is given in Table 15 based on federal data for the years 1960 and 1970, and on the revised " C" series of the UPED model ( BEBR) for the years 1975- 1995. Also shown are the calculated ratios of population to labor force and population to employment. It is desirable to compare the federal figures with those of the Utah Department of Employment Security ( DES), which are shown in Table 16. The State figures also show the amount of self- employment, which is exclusive of the 183,660 payroll employment, as also is the agricultural employment. The correct DES figure for resident labor force of Salt Lake County, averaged over the 12 months of 1970 was 186,310 ( not 189,550). The Census figure for the labor force ( 180,790) applied only in the month of April 1970; hence the DES figure is more truly representative. But the projections of future employment and population are more closely related to the Census data than to the yearly average figures of the DES. The April 1970 Census figure for employed residents ( 174,903) does not differ appreciably from the DES figure in Table 16 for " total individuals employed" ( 178,810), and this difference could well be accounted for in the distinction between a yearly average and a figure representing only the events of early April. 25 |
