Highlights of certain of the major construction and advance planning activities are set forth in the following paragraphs: Flaming Gorge Storage Unit-Utah Work performed under the prime contract for the construction of the 495-foot-high concrete arch dam and the 108,000-kilowatt powerplant on the Green River in Utah was behind schedule at June 30, 1960, with completed work aggregating 24 percent in 40 percent of the overall time allowed by the contract. Diversion of the Green River and completion of upstream and downstream cofferdams cleared the way for excavation of the dam foundation and keyways. Pouring of concrete in the dam structure started during the fall of 1960. Other major construction items completed during the fiscal year were the public shelter house and parking area at the damsite and the seismograph station. The first phase of clearing the reservoir site was progressing well ahead of schedule at the close of the fiscal year. Glen Canyon Storage Unit-Arizona Work on the prime contract for construction of the 700-foot-high concrete arch dam and the 900,000-kilowatt powerplant was at a virtual standstill from July 6, 1959, to January 4, 1960, due to a general strike of the contractor's employees. Construction progress at June 30, 1960, was behind schedule, with 38 percent aggregate work completion in 45 percent of the overall contract time. By the end of the fiscal year, the excavation for the dam and powerplant foundation and keyways was completed, and placement of concrete in both structures was initiated in June 1960. Other major construction items completed during the fiscal year were the administration building; garage, fire station, and police buildings; seismograph vault; and soil stabilization in the town of Page, Ariz. 114 |
