Show 4. WYOMING a. La Barge Project The La Barge Project is in the Green River Basin in Lincoln and Sublette Counties. The project lands are situated between South Piney Creek and La Barge Creek along the west side of the Green River in a narrow strip about 30 miles long with an average width of \x/2 miles. This project would involve a direct flow diversion from the Green River. Water would be carried in the 35-mile long Green River Canal to serve the project area. The canal heading would be about 6 miles east of Big Piney, Wyoming, and would be placed low enough in the west bank of the river to eliminate the need for a diversion dam. Advance Planning The La Barge Project definite plan report was completed and submitted to the Commissioner on June 12, 1961. Since the project was authorized by the Colorado River Storage Project Act of April 11, 1956, a detailed land classification has reduced the irrigable area from 7,970 acres to 2,893 acres. The reduced project would still require a 35-mile long canal as previously planned for the larger acreage. The report shows the irrigators could not fully pay its operation and maintenance costs, and could pay nothing on construction. The Bureau of Reclamation has, therefore, concluded that construction should be indefinitely deferred. The State of Wyoming was advised of this conclusion in August 1961. b. Lyman Project The Lyman Project is located in Uinta County in Southwestern Wyoming near the town of Lyman. The project would improve the late season irrigation water supply on 39,700 acres of land. To provide additional late season irrigation water, storage and conveyance structures would be constructed to utilize the spring flood flows of Blacks Fork and its tributary, East Fork of Smiths Fork. Recreation and Fish and Wildlife benefits would also be derived from the project. Advance Planning Advance planning was started in fiscal year 1957. Engineering and economic studies are directed towards formulating a plan of development. Plan formulation was necessary to study alternative reservoir sites.
