Show better for the school and easier for my successor to make the change during the school session after the work for the year had been organized than between sessions when the new men would have to work blindly for a long time. I had not thought, however that I would be any hurry to give up the place after the opening of the year. But an opportunity has presented itself which I am very eager to seize. To do so would necessitate my giving up the school work about the end of the first week of the term. I have been too long connected with the Collegiate and with the Board of Home Missions to leave either in the lurch, however. I shall sacrifice my own interests before those of the school or the Board. Now, if you can be induced to allow me to nominate my successor, I should have no hesitation at all in stepping out at that time. You are the one man who knows the principles, the traditions and the spirit of the school, and whose standing with the pupils is such as to ensure their hearty support and loyalty. I am in the position to know the needs of the position and your qualifications for it. I could hand out the work to which I have given sixteen years of the best of my life over to you without any misgiving. <br><br> Before writing to you I went to see Dr. McNiece and talk the matter over with him. I felt as though I ought not to make any propositions of this kind without mentioning it to him. While he said he would be very sorry to lose you from the college faculty, he seemed to realize that it would be to the interest of the college to have you take that position rather than some stranger. He did not discourage my writing you about the matter. <br><br> Now, Mr. Sweazey, will you not take the question under careful consideration and let me know what you think of it at your earliest convenience.
