Show HARRY A. MOYER ovember 22, 2002 BEN: Did you ever hit armor? Did you ever hit a convoy or tanks did you ever encounter ... HAR: Mostly, the stuff that we saw was just an area in Italy. Because they said, Here s a crossroads, go hit the fourth quadrant. Put your bombs over there. Go strafing there. Strafe north of this road," or whatever. So that's what we did. Mostly it was foxholes type of things out there. We've got frag bombs, which were clusters for against troops, and then when we were bombing with 500 pounders that was probably against trench tanks or that type of thing. Impalements. And then we were on patrol over the beachhead, and the Germans would come through- 109's and 190's- and I was on patrol on, I guess about the 17th or 18th. We had a radar patroller, you know, but the guys were coming in pretty low, so he couldn't pick up the strafers, you know, the 1 09's. But we'd pick them up and they'd head out towards the valley, and towards the pass out there, and so we'd pick them up and they'd always be heading that way. I picked up two of them, and was chasing them. One of them was getting away, and I was closing in on another. BEN: Just you, or are you flying the lead, or an element lead? HAR: I didn't fly in a lead- I patrolled. So I had this guy, and I was firing at him and knocking him down, and here comes a Spitfire - passed me like this! He comes like that, he's going in front of the other guy in front of me. It's going to be fun getting away. BEN: And he's signaling you keep on coming? 65 |
