In all phases, and then we went into - aft r this tit-twisting- then we went into what they call pre-flight, which was at Maxwell Field. They had a new ... BEN: So you stayed right there, then? You said Gunter was right next to Maxwell? HAR: Well, we were in tent city, and then we were transferred there. They had just built some new barracks for us, and we were the second class in there. So that's when we started getting into what I refer to as our formal Air Force educational program. You know, we went to school in navigation, code, that type of thing- weather. BEN: But still not inside of an aircraft? This is still ground school? HAR: Indoctrination, yeah. So we were there as middle-classmen and upper-classmen too, and a lot of guys were washed out at that time. They just started to throw out. BEN: Do you recall how long pre-flight was? HAR: Yeah, it was about four and a half, five weeks. BEN: So, you're about six weeks in basic? HAR: No, we were- It's in a class of about four and a half or five weeks as an underclassman, and then upper-classman. So we were there about a month and a half, two months. BEN: Obviously, you ended up flying, of course, so you passed all this. Was it difficult, though, the theory of flight, the things they were presenting to you? HAR: No, I had a pretty good grasp of that, ~ecause most of it was mathematics, you know, drawing, that type of thing. The only big thing that I remember I had a conflict 11 |
