| Abstract |
Moyer (b. 1920) was in the aviation cadet program at the University of Akron at the time of Pearl Harbor. He was called to active duty in January 1942. He discusses his flight training at length. Other topics covered include joining the 33rd Fighter Group, Africa and Sicily, aerial combat, his views on General Montgomery, contact with Sicilian civilians, the merits of various aircraft, Anzio, being stationed in China, marriage, and duty as a flight instructor. 115 pages. |

Show HARRY A. MOYER Novemb r 22, 2002 with was learning the Morse Code , and that was by rout. You had to sit there and nobody really figured out, "What the hell is this all about?" And I remember that I was not doing too good at it, but I said to myself, "Well, if I don't get this thing, they' re going to kick my butt out of here!" So, I was a little behind, we had pre-time, so I went over underneath the windows of the classes that were doing it and listened in, and so I improved myself by doing it. BEN: So you can just sit by, so it's just broadcast out loud to the classroom ... HAR: No, it was in a classroom, but I was outside the door or the windows. BEN: You can hear it there. HAR: Yeah. BEN: So you had to put in a little extra time for Norse Code? HAR: Yeah, that was one of my weak points, because I just slucked off, so to speak. I decided, "Well, that's not the thing to do." BEN: Did you ever have to use the code after that? HAR: Oh yeah! BEN: So it was something that you did end up ... HAR: Yeah, you had to know it. You had to send it and receive it at certain speeds: didi- di-da-da-da-di-di (varying speeds) ... And then you took it in breaks, you took the letter down that you didn't know- forget that keep on going because you can pick it up - just keep on going. BEN: What else happens in pre-flight? 12 |
