| Abstract |
Moyer (b. 1920) was in the aviation cadet program at the University of Akron at the time of Pearl Harbor. He was called to active duty in January 1942. He discusses his flight training at length. Other topics covered include joining the 33rd Fighter Group, Africa and Sicily, aerial combat, his views on General Montgomery, contact with Sicilian civilians, the merits of various aircraft, Anzio, being stationed in China, marriage, and duty as a flight instructor. 115 pages. |

Show HARRY A. MOYER ovember 22 2002 High School in Akron? Akron at the time, is that a proper city were you in town ther ? HAR: Yeah. BEN: Did you move around much, or were you in one location? HAR: Oh, well, we mostly moved around in the later part, in the 1930s, when the Depression was all started and my dad lost our house. Then we had to rent for a while. BEN: Was he a salesman of various wares, or did he work for a company? HAR: Yeah, he worked for a company; a salesman. Clothing. BEN: Okay. Let's see, growing up then, what kind of things were you responsible for? What kind of chores did you have? HAR: We had relatives out in the country. We went out there and worked on the farms and played around on the farms. So we had that exposure. In Pennsylvania my dad relatives there family down there, and we visited and stayed there for a couple weeks during the summer. Also my Mother's relatives were in Cleveland, Ohio, and I would visit them during the summer. BEN: What interests did you have as a young man? Did you enjoy schooling? HAR: Yeah, uh huh. I guess I was in the basketball team in grade school, and I was too small for high school. You know, track, and that type of thing. Swimming. BEN: Okay. You mentioned that your father lost his home as a result of the depression? Just economic conditions going bad? How did that affect you- do you recall, as a young man? HAR: It was kind of a change. I can't remember right now, but you know, obviously ... 3 |
