| Abstract |
Moyer (b. 1920) was in the aviation cadet program at the University of Akron at the time of Pearl Harbor. He was called to active duty in January 1942. He discusses his flight training at length. Other topics covered include joining the 33rd Fighter Group, Africa and Sicily, aerial combat, his views on General Montgomery, contact with Sicilian civilians, the merits of various aircraft, Anzio, being stationed in China, marriage, and duty as a flight instructor. 115 pages. |

Show HARRY A. MOYER ov mber 22, 2002 BEN: Did you have to change schools when you moved? Did you move in bigg r jump like that, or did you always sort of stay in a little area? HAR: Well, we lost our home in 1933 when I was in the last grade in grade school. And so we moved out of the area, and then came back into the area when I went to West High School. BEN: Did your father work with the WP A or anything like that, or did he just find work elsewhere? HAR: Just found work elsewhere. BEN: What year did you graduate from high school? HAR: 1938. BEN: Graduating in '38, what kind of prospects did you have? What was in store for you, did you think? HAR: Well, I wanted to go to college then, but I didn't quite have the money at that time, so I went to work for a local funeral house- driving the ambulance and pick-up, and just whatever. So I was there at the funeral home for about a year and then went into college at the University of Akron. BEN: So, let's see, you had an older brother, right? And had he gone to school? HAR: He was in Pennsylvania with my uncle and aunt down there. He was working on the farm down there and going to school down there. BEN: Where did the idea for more education come from? Was that encouraged by your parents, or was that just something ... 4 |
