Show 3 THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH message from martha bradley-evans Martha Bradley-Evans Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dean of Undergraduate Studies Martha Bradley-Evans The production of new knowledge is what most distinguishes a Research 1 University. Deeply embedded in our mission as an institution is engagement in research, teaching and service. As the flagship university in the state system, the University of Utah sets the standard of excellence in scholarship, producing cutting-edge research that serves the state, the region and the world. What is special about the U's undergraduate research program is its engagement of students in the process of producing new knowledge. Students work in bio-medical engineering labs, in the special collec-tions section of the Marriott library, and in labs at College of Pharmacy or the School of Medicine. The range of undergraduate research opportunities reflects the diversity and richness of this university. Widely recognized nationally as a "high impact" practice, undergraduate research results in deep student learning and satisfaction. At the same time that students are engaged in research, they are more actively involved in shaping their education, molding it around their passions or their educa-tional and professional goals. Students can see the tangible, demonstrable impact of their own work through research publications, presentations at professional conferences, and the deep satisfaction that comes from doing meaningful work. We believe that undergraduate research is one of the most powerful educational experiences a student can have at the University of Utah. We congratulate you for your tremendous work and this significant accomplishment. And, importantly, we acknowledge the important work by faculty who make undergraduate research experiences possible. |
