Show 573 buildings. R. 1401. Trouble was encountered in bringing the boats through Glen Canyon. " Q Tell me about that, please. " A Our first rapid was at Tickaboo Creek, and it was a big one; some of the boats got damaged, -- two of them I believe, got damaged; we had to pull in shore end repair; then when we got down to Trachyte Creek or river or whatever it was, we had more trouble because of a bigger rapid, and all the boats sprung leaks. " We stopped there nearly two days, repairing boats." R. 1402. In going down to Lees Ferry the only trouble encountered was sand bars, which they ran into every few miles, with one or more boats. They had no trouble with rapids in that section. There was rough water that might have been called rapids had it been further up above Cataract Canyon, but the boats got through all right. R. 1402- 1403. " Q Did you encounter any sand waves in that canyon? " A Down towards the lower end we did, sand waves and high wind, which made great, high waves, almost played our backs out to make it, to row it." R. 1402. The party left the river, on the first trip, at Vasey's Paradise, about forty- five miles below Lees Ferry where they left the boats after pulling them up out of the river as far as they could, and tying them to rocks.
