Show Fig. 133 Wells Fargo Stage Station. Ogden. Francis L. Horspool. Oil on canvas. 1939. H: 84.375 cm. W: 133.75 cm. Collection of Utah Arts Council. Francis Leroy Horspool, a self-declared Utah "primitive," utilized textural changes, personal symbols, and attention to detail in creating "fantastical" scenes from his past. Having a strong aversion to frames, he characteristically expanded his art work over the frame, including it in the picture, and oftentimes carved into the frame explanatory inscriptions. Tiny, almost indiscernible figures appear in much of his work. Horspool claims that as he was painting the second coat of "Wells Fargo Stage Station" little fairies appeared, reminding him of his father's story about the station being haunted. Fig. 134 White Cliffs East of Orderville. Orderville. Joseph Bolander. Oil on canvas. 1978. H: 60 cm. W: 90 cm. Collection of Joseph Bolander, Orderville. Self-taught artist Joseph Bolander is a native of Orderville. His typical subject matter includes southern Utah landscapes, ghost towns, and western history. 133 |
