Show Fig. 89 Quilt. Salt Lake City. Emma Bull. Silk, velvet. 1893. H: 217.5 cm. W: 182.5 cm. Collection of Utah Historical Society. Made by Emma Bull of Salt Lake City for the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, this silk and velvet "crazy" quilt includes intricate embroidered designs of significance to Utah: a beehive, a sego lily, a log cabin, Salt Lake City's Eagle Gate and Mormon Temple, the British Union Jack, and the American flag. The Victorian fondness for "crazy" quilts, promoted by women's magazines, was shared by Mormon women. 95 |
