Show 4554 Freeman- D 2573 boats; I think that is within a few inches of their exact dimensions; very broad skiff, square stern; originally very stoutly built, I think with some oak framing. I remember there was an ask stem or bow, and had been used one or two seasons. They were built and owned by the Southern California Edison Company, borrowed by the survey at this time. Q Describe how much draft they had. A That would depend entirely on the amount of the load. Q With the load that you had. A heavily loaded at all times, both coming up and coming down -- I should say they would have been drawing from six to eight inches. That is a difficult thing to say without actual measurement. Q What kind of motor equipment did the boats have? A To aid in the up stream navigation we used three Evinrude out- board motors, one new Elto motor which I had sent direct to me from the factory. That gave us one for each of those skiffs at the start. Q Were they equipped with a kind of hinge? A The Elto motor was equipped at the factory with a hinge. Through the ingenuity of the chief of the party, Mr. Tom Wimmer, the Evinrudes, which were without this tilting device and originally a perfectly stiff engine, were clamped on to a hinged frame on the back of the |
