Show 4564 Freeman- D 2583 a rapid. Heavy, strong, swirling current, but not the broken sort of thing one would call a rapid. Q At what point did you encounter your first rapid? A The nearest thing that any interpretation would be called a rapid, as near as I could recall, was not very many miles below the mouth of the canyon which drains from Rainbow bridge; I think it is called Aztec canyon. The condition is more serious then from the fact it occurred one of the heaviest and most widely spread cloud we encountered. A tremendous storm broke, precipitation heavy enough to raise the river several feet. Q rapid? A I would like to explain that previous to out reaching that rapid my engine had gone out completely, and that one of the other engines had also failed; my engine simply scoured out the gears; we left it on the bank. One of the other engines, I think Mr. Jones', had gone completely, leaving us only two that we were working, the one that tom Wimmer had, and the one that his son was handling. In order to get a working arrangement, the two boats were lashed together. My boat was lashed ahead of Mr. Tom Wimmer's boat, that of Jones ahead of the other. The disabled |
