There were occasional groundings on sandbars. The river was a little lower then. Q On the down trip did you continue as you did up, with young Mr. Wimmer in charge of one set of boats? A Andy Wimmer had charge of one unit, and Tom Wimmer the other. I was with Mr. Wimmer on the down trip, and there were two other boatmen with Andy Wimmer. Tom and I had the running of the one craft. One of the men had gone out from Hall's Crossing; there were only five. Q Was the down trips continuous trip to Lees Ferry, or did you stop? A I think something like a week was spent on the river. We made stops at the San Juan: we made the surveys which I have mentioned; there was a stop at Rainbow bridge, and another stop at Warm creek, where we crawled out to the mesa and located one or two points on Father Escalante's route; also at the Hole- in- the- Rock, where the remarkable Mormon migration crossed, the point where the wheel vehicles were taken over the cliffs.
