Show 4557 Freeman- D 2578 We made a very impressive departure, the only occasion on the trip in which the four boats got away together and continued running together. We ran all the way around the first bend without a break- down. That greatly impressed the whole population of Lees don't think any navigation as impressive as our get- away occurred on the whole voyage. Nothing occurred until we passed the first bend, as far as my recollection goes. After that, things were occurring pretty regularly for the next day or two days. Just around the bend somebody's motor, I think it was Bill Jones;, hit something and went out of order. Mine ceased a little bit after. Mr. Wimmer went and got out of sight; he was reading the water better and handled his boat with more skill. Finding Bill Jones laid up in an eddy, I tried to help him out by giving him a tow to start his motor. His tow line became tangled in my motor, and both boats were nearly swamped before getting out of the whirlpool. Finally we got clear, and started. Not until our halt at noon did I look at the walls and notice the beauty of it; I was so busy up to that time I have no recollection of it until the down trip. Q How far did you get the first day? |
