Show 4553 Freeman- D 2572 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q On the up stream trip just tell me about the personnel, who was on the trip, your equipment, the object of the trip. A Indian could probably do that best by explaining the character of the expedition. The party had been invited by Mr. La Rue, of the Geological Survey, more in an education way than anything else. The party was to reach Glen canyon at Hall's Crossing, the most convenient point. The invitation was originally extended to me as a writer to became a member of that party. Indian replied MR. FARNSWORTH: Indian don't thank that is competent. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Just leave out the conversation. A I was first asked to join that party, and I requested instead that I be allowed to become a boatman on the trip going both up and down the river. That arrangement was made. For that reason I was a boatman on the party that went up, and later on the return trip. Q Tell me what kind of boats you had going up and the size and draft. A There were four boats of the skiff type; I don't recall measuring them; we always spoke of them as eighteen - foot |
