Show 1 Chua hid in the shadows of the cliff before following further. He didn't need to continue up the canyon. He knew there was water. It would be foolish to take further chances of being seen by the boy. )He could come back later to get the water. Chua turned to retrace his steps down the canyon. Something sharp stung his ear. Was it a spear? No, it was a small pebble. Chua felt his ear. There was blood. Another one hit his back. He turned to see the boy without his water jar. "Why were you following me?" rfe spoke Chua's language. He was a Hopi also. 'This is the water of the Bear Clan. There is only enough for us.' V* He shot another pebble out of a hollow reed that zinged the rock at Ms side. Chua out of range behind a boulder. - Jfrr^JU^ * W f U T l ^ W v ^b*J~ "If you are from a large clan migrating this way, you must find other water." Tf^'s Another pebble glanced off the rock. ? "If you'll quit shooting at me," Chua said, "I'll tell you why I'm here." "I don't want to know," said the boy. "Leave at once." "I'm not here to hurt you or take your water supply," Chua said. The boy had moved around the boulders above him and was within striking distance again. Chua slipped and stumbled down the canyon with a shower of small rocks falling as he went. |
