Show 113 "The net," Toho said. "We'll make it into a snare." "Good thinking," Chua said. "Weil hold two of the comers down with large rocks like the hunters do. Then we'll place a rabbit on the net. When the eagle lands to eat the rabbit, we'll throw the other half of the net over him." "Yes," Toho said. "Bring me a stick so I can kill a rabbit." Chua made his way back to the edge of the shale for a couple of sticks. He helped Toho down to the flat where the burrowing animals lived. They waited. N Toho scanned the ground. "I've found a rabbit hole," he said. He hopped towards it on one foot. "I'll wait behind this rock." "Did the boys and men of your Snake Clan hunt rabbits together?" asked Toho. "Yes," Chua said. "We surrounded the rabbits in a closed circle and move in slowly to kill the rabbits with sticks." "Sometimes, we use rocks," Toho said. "Roast rabbit would taste good tonight," Chua said. Toho smiled. "The fur makes warm robes." "I know," Chua said, shivering a little. He would have to think about warm clothes soon. The weather was getting cooler. "It's hard to wait for dusk, when the rabbits appear," Chua said. He sprinkled commeal near the rabbit hole, and offered a silent prayer to give thanks to the universe to let the rabbit know he was needed. The sun hovered above the horizon now, sinking slowly into the earth. The evening shadows became longer. The boys watched. |
